Sclerotherapy Sclerotherapy is the process by which a chemical solution is injected at multiple points along your vein. Sclerotherapy treatment performed by Dr Patel. What does the treatment involve? The chemical solution is injected into the vein which then imitates the lining of your vein wall which in combination with compression causes the vein wall to collapse. Your body then absorbs the vein overtime leaving you with smoother looking legs. This is an injectable treatment performed by the doctor. This treatment has some downtime associated with it. What areas can be treated? Sclerotherapy is used to treat: Spider veins and small veins that are not causing more serious problems. Smaller varicose veins that come back after vein-stripping surgery. Larger varicose veins, when minimally invasive techniques are used. Before & After Treatment Summary Procedure Time 30 days Recovery Time 3 days Anaesthetic None Back to Work Same day Duration of Results Permanent on treated area No. of Treatments 1 Treatment Prices Treatment Cost Sclerotherapy from £200 per treatment Frequently Asked Questions How many sessions will I need and how far apart should I have them? Generally, it can take 2-3 treatments at monthly intervals for best results, but patients often see a 90% improvement after the first treatment. Am I a suitable candidate / what are the Contra-indications? If your veins are small red thread veins less than 1-2mm in diameter, whether on the face or the legs you are suitable for laser vein treatment. If your veins are blue in colour and larger than 0.05mm they should be treated by the alternative method of vein removal called sclerotherapy. Prior to sclerotherapy, you should avoid certain medications. Talk to your doctor about all medicines (including over-the-counter drugs, herbs, and dietary supplements) you are taking. If you need to take an antibiotic before sclerotherapy, contact your doctor. No lotion should be applied to the legs before the procedure. We would recommend avoiding aspirin, ibuprofen (such as Nurofen) or other anti-inflammatory drugs for 48-72 hours before sclerotherapy. What results can I expect? Studies have shown that as many as 50%-80% of injected veins may be eliminated with each session of sclerotherapy. Less than 10% of the people who have sclerotherapy do not respond to the injections at all. In these instances, different solutions can be tried. Although this procedure works for most patients, there are no guarantees for success. In general, spider veins respond in three to six weeks, and larger veins respond in three to four months. If the veins respond to the treatment, they will not reappear. However, new veins may appear at the same rate as before. If needed, you may return for injections. Are there any side effects? You may experience certain side effects after sclerotherapy. There are milder effects, such as itching, which can last for one or two days after the procedure. Also, you will have raised, red areas at the injection site for a day. Bruising may also occur around the injection site and can last several days or rarely weeks. Other Sclerotherapy Side Effects Include: Neovascularization -- the development of new, tiny blood vessels -- may occur at the site of sclerotherapy treatment. These tiny veins can appear days or weeks after the procedure. These may require laser treatment. Downtime and Aftercare / post treatment advice? After sclerotherapy you will be able to drive yourself home and resume your regular daily activities. Walking is encouraged. You will be instructed to wear support hosiery to "compress" the treated vessels. If you have compression hosiery from previous treatments, you are encouraged to bring them with you to be certain they still have adequate compression. Following the injections, avoid aspirin, ibuprofen, or other anti-inflammatory drugs for at least 48 hours. You should keen the bandaging applied for 3 days and nights. Also, for 72 hours after treatment avoid the following: Hot baths Hot compresses Whirlpools or saunas Direct exposure to sunlight Showers are permitted, but the water should be cooler than usual. The injection sites may be washed with a mild soap and tepid water. What is the treatment cost? Treatment price from £200 per treatment Testimonials D.S "I had sclerotherapy on both legs in May 2015. My veins covered the whole leg. Being only 41 it completely ruined my social life as I am very active and enjoy sports. I was always in trousers and never going swimming. Also, not having a holiday because I just could not have bare legs. The procedure was pain free and my results are mind blowing. I am very happy to wear shorts, go swimming. And I have booked a holiday. This has changed my life. Everybody at the clinic are amazing so friendly, helpful and understanding. So caring and they listen. The advice they give before and after very informative. Just had botox and looking forward to the results. Thank you all"
